The Internet has done a magnificent job of making the world a smaller space. However, for practical purposes, being able to police the Internet is just not possible. And that has led to the rise of several unsavory elements who are always out to scam people. There are several scams that run online, and many try to make the most of charitable organizations and their willingness to accept payment through an online means. Being smart about yourself online is how you protect yourself from scams.

Here are some things you should look out for before making a donation online. Most donation scams online are generally in the form of unsolicited and fraudulent email. There are also such posts that are found on forums, where people come forth asking for help or donation pretending to be representatives from a well known agency. This form of fraud is commonly known as phishing and something that all forums of communication warn about. Each time there is a natural disaster or any such situation that warrants mobilization of resources, you will find some of these scams surfacing.

It generally preys on the generosity of donors and often their ignorance on what is right and what is wrong. In order to help save you from online scams, you will have to try and improve the security set up of your computer. Make sure you use a firewall, an anti-virus and constantly update your spyware. Always use the latest of technology that constantly updates itself dealing with newer from of internet threats. Never click on any links that come in emails that are unsolicited. These can be ways of getting information that is saved onto the computer. Each time you get a mail from the agency you are supporting, place the URL in a search engine and see if the same thing pops up. Only then can you be sure that you are in the right place. Always check spellings on the URL. Sometimes, names are mis-spelt with minor differences making them a bit tricky to catch with the naked eye.

Never open any attachments that come with unsolicited mails. These can contain viruses and you could end up trashing your hard disk entirely. Use basic online transaction skills such as using an online keyboard for typing and by logging out of your account and site once you are done. All these measures will ensure that you get to do your part without being taken for a ride.
